Not everything which google does are hits, some flop to the core, i have personally found out one such experiment, google experimental timeline search, the link is no longer available if its found i would put here..

Here are some other major flop experiments which i found when i was googling, pretty funny..


GOOGLE X:

GOOGLE CATALOG:

This is yet another google initiative which is still in the beta stage for over six years now,
this experiment or rather a product search initiative established by google still not able to clear the beta testing of it and its still in shelfs, though it was first launched for usb search, now its increased to a comprehensive product search.

GOOGLE VIDEO PLAYER:

The most interesting video player launched, but couldnt face the competition from other players, which already provided the basic requisities. Here the advantage of this is that we can skip the video before the video gets loaded..

GOOGLE WEB ACCELERATOR:

See folks this is my personal experience, i have used it and felt its no use, it says it accelerates the web by using the cookies enabled in your web browser (as it promised), but i felt it did nothing more than a normal google search. The google search is faster than this web accelerator.

They take up anonymous information from the web by using the cookies, and they are collecting a database of what url people visit the most, this is the wide known critic for web accelerator and this is still offered. They are noting what people buy and there is a lot of information obtained from what people visit.

GOOGLE ANSWERS:

The Competition to Yahoo Answers flopped miserably which one??? yeah you heard it right its google answers.

It was a interesting site, for five years it offered a bid for finding the exact researched answer for it. If you want a solution or answer to the question you can bid some money so that any other person, who dares to take the bid could answer and take the money, however many opted for providing the free answer to your questions.

Though google answers are still available, we cannot put any questions, we can simply now browse for solutions for the previous questions.. Click here to find answers

GOOGLE COUPONS:

After reading the heading dont ask me what it is, yes its the google coupons, its equivalent to a wild species because not many have heard of it and n0t many have it.. he he he!!!

The idea behind Google Coupons is that when you are searching for a local business using Google Maps, a local company can deliver a coupon enticing you to do business with it. The coupon would be displayed next to the Google Map and could be printed out and redeemed.

But google coupons expired in 2006....

GOOGLE VOICE SEARCH:

From the Google department of way-before-its time came Google Voice Search. The service, which was originally an experiment within Google Labs, was launched in 2003 and worked like this. First, visit the Google Voice Search site. Next, call the phone number on the screen and speak your keyword search query. Then go back to your browser, click on the link on the Google Voice Search site, and bingo, a window with the search results appears.

No wonder this service got axed. Searching the Web like this is comparable to calling up your brother-in-law to drive across town and brush your teeth for you before you go to bed. On the other hand, this cool technology experiment was a precursor to mobile phone services of today such as ChaCha and Google's own, very handy Google 411 service.


















GOOGLE VIEWER:

The idea behind the Google Viewer software program was that you could type in a query, press submit, and then sit back and watch as it loaded actual Web pages that it found. Next, Google Viewer displayed the results to you as a slide show.

The idea of sneaking a peak at a Web page before clicking on the link eventually came to fruition--it just didn't require a software download to do it. Today you can preview pages in search results delivered by Ask.com, Powerset, and Yahoo, no application required.

GOOGLE SECURE CHECKOUT:

n June 2007 thousands of eBay loyalists descended on Boston for eBay's annual sellers convention. And in hopes of promoting its new Google Checkout payment system--which would be competing directly with eBay's Paypal subsidiary--Google organized a party to be held during the eBay show, inviting eBay sellers to attend. In addition, the Google party was supposed to be a protest against eBay for barring merchants from using Google Checkout.

When eBay got wind of Google's plan, it promptly cancelled all of its U.S. ads running on the search engine for more than a week. At the time, eBay was the single largest buyer of search ads on Google.

Google cancelled its Boston tea party.

ORKUT:

Actor David Hasselhoff is worshipped in Germany, but his talents are less appreciated here in the United States. The same might be said of the domestically underappreciated Google Orkut. Introduced in 2004, the social networking site is a big hit in Brazil, india, but in the U.S., Orkut has lagged in popularity behind Facebook and MySpace.

Google Orkut's lack of popularity in the U.S. has been attributed not only to strong competition from the other services, but also to such factors as its early "invite only" policy, a lack of support for blogging tools, and an absence of video features.
